The EU has published the final document of the Food Information Regulation, the first wholesale EU-wide review of food labelling law in 30 years. It will come into force in December (and will have direct effect in the UK and other EU countries) but there are lengthy transition periods for its provisions. The object of the regulation is to "streamline" the existing legislation and bring it up to date with developments in food information over the years. It should, it is hoped, reduce the burden on food businesses by providing more legal certainty and benefit consumers by providing clarity of labelling across the EU.
